Or maybe stick to your orignal plan and take a train to Desenzano and then a ferry to Sirmione (very beautiful) and then to Bardolino and return to verona by bus.

Anyhow, we stayed in Sirmione and got around without a car.However, if we could change anything we would probably have stayed in either Garda or Bardolino as it is easier to visit other parts of the lake from these two on the ferries and buses.
